When should you not use your high beams?

Using high beams is not advisable when there is oncoming traffic. This is because high beams can be blinding to other drivers, significantly reducing their visibility and potentially causing dangerous situations. The bright light can impair the vision of the oncoming driver, creating an unsafe environment for both vehicles. It is standard practice to switch to low beams when approaching another vehicle to ensure safety on the road and to maintain good driving etiquette.

In contrast, using high beams in fog can actually worsen visibility because the light reflects off the fog particles, creating a glare. Similarly, in urban areas where there are streetlights, high beams are not necessary and can be disruptive to other road users. On clear roads, high beams are appropriate, but care should always be taken to adjust them when encountering other drivers.
